Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy designed to improve symptoms associated with trauma, anxiety/phobias, grief, and depression. It is unlike any other form of treatment and doesn't focus on talking. After doing EMDR ourselves, we were trained because we found it more effective than talk therapy alone.
Developed in 1989, EMDR incorporates elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, somatic therapy, and bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or tapping) that activate both the left and right hemispheres of the brain to help reduce the intensity of emotions associated with intense memories and experiences (Kiessling, EMDR Consulting, 2023). Unlike other forms of treatment, EMDR also focuses on the body's physiological responses in addition to the emotional components of healing. After participating in EMDR treatment, clients report less distress, a greater window of tolerance for stress, better sleep, and improved relationships. EMDR gets results faster than traditional talk therapy, and clients report making significant progress in months instead of years.
EMDR can be highly effective for individuals struggling with the aftermath of distressing experiences. However, it depends on individual circumstances and should be discussed with a qualified therapist trained in EMDR.
